Οι Swallow the Sun ιδρύθηκαν στις αρχές του 2000 από τον Juha Raivio, και τον Pasi Pasanen που σύντομα εντάχθηκε (και οι δυο είχαν παίξει στους Plutonium Organge). Έκαναν πρόβα μερικά τραγούδια, ένα από αυτά το ''Though Her Silver Body'' το οποίο θα κατέληγε στο πρώτο τους demo, το Out of This Gloomy Light. Το 2001 εντάχθηκε ο Markus Jämsten, τον οποίο γνώριζαν ήδη ο Raivo και ο Pasanen από τα προηγούμενα συγκροτήματα τους,  ως δεύτερος κιθαρίστας και ο Mikko Kotamäki από τους Funeris Nocturnum ως τραγουδιστής. Έπειτα μπήκαν στο συγκρότημα ο Aleksi Munten (πλήκτρα) και ο Matti Honkonen (μπάσο), επίσης από τους Funeris Nocturn. Την Άνοιξη του 2002 άρχισαν να προετοιμάζουν τραγούδια για το demo, το οποίο ηχογραφήθηκε τον Ιανουάριο του 2003 στο Sam's Workshop με τον Sami Kokko o οποίος έκανε και τη μίξη του demo.

Ένα συμβόλαιο με τη Firefox Records υπογράφηκε μερικούς μήνες μετά την ηχογράφηση του demo και οι Swallow the Sun μπήκαν στο στούντιο στα τέλη Ιουλίου του 2003.  Κατά τη διάρκεια των τριών πρώτων εβδομάδων ηχογράφησαν το πρώτο άλμπουμ τους, The Morning Never Came.

Το Φεβρουάριο του 2005 κυκλοφόρησαν το δεύτερο άλμπουμ τους, Ghosts of Loss. To single τους, Forgive her, κέρδισε τη 4η θέση στα 20 Καλύτερα singles μέσα στη πρώτη εβδομάδα της κυκλοφορίας του και έμεινε στα charts για 6 εβδομάδες.

Κατά τη διάρκεια του 2006 υπέγραψαν με τη Spinefarm Records και έκαναν μια μικρή περιοδεία στην Ευρώπη. Τον Ιανουάριο του 2007 κυκλοφόρησαν το 3ο τους άλμπουμ, Hope, το οποίο περιλάμβανε μια διασκευή του τραγουδιού Alavilla mailla των Timo Rautiainen & Trio Niskalaukaus ως μπόνους για την έκδοση digipack, που τραγούδησε ο Tomi Jouses, ο frondman του συναδελφικού συγκροτήματος Amorphis. Άλλη μια guest εμφάνιση είναι αυτή του Jonas Renkse από τους Katatonia με το τραγούδι The Justice of Syffering. Πήγαν σε μια περιοδεία στις ΗΠΑ μαζί με τους Κatatonia, Scar Symmetry και Insomnium στο τέλος του 2007

Το Σεπτέμβριο του 2008, κυκλοφόρησαν το ΕP Plague of Butterflies. Τον Οκτώβρη ανακοίνωσαν μια περιοδεία με δέκα live, το Δεκέμβρη στις ΗΠΑ ως support στους Apocalyptica.

Στις 18 Μαΐου 2009, ανακοίνωσαν ότι ο Kai Haihto από τους Wintersun θα ενταχθεί για να γεμίσει το κενό που άφησε ο πρώην ντράμερ Pasi Pasanen.

Oι Swallow the Sun επιβεβαίωσαν στις 12 Ιουνίου ότι το επόμενο άλμπουμ τους θα ονομάζεται New Moon και θα είναι μια παραγωγή του Jens Bogren, επίσης δήλωσαν ότι ο Kai Haihto θα παίζει drums στο άλμπουμ. 

Biography

Swallow the Sun was formed in early 2000 by Juha Raivio, joined soon by Pasi Pasanen came along (both had played in Plutonium Orange). They rehearsed a couple of songs, one of them being "Through Her Silvery Body" which would end up on their first demo,Out of This Gloomy Light. In 2001 Markus Jämsen, whom Raivio and Pasanen already knew from their earlier bands, joined as a second guitarist, and Mikko Kotamäki from Funeris Nocturnum as singer; then Aleksi Munter (keyboards) and Matti Honkonen (bass), also of Funeris Nocturnum, joined the band. In the spring of 2002 they started arranging songs for the demo, which was recorded in January 2003 at Sam's Workshop with Sami Kokko, who also mixed the demo.

A record deal with Firebox Records was signed a few months after the recordings of the demo, and Swallow the Sun entered studio at late July 2003. During the following three weeks they recorded their debut album, The Morning Never Came.

In February 2005, Swallow the Sun released their second album, Ghosts of Loss. Their single, "Forgive Her...," gained 4th place on the Finnish Top 20 singles chart in its first week of release, and stayed on the charts for 6 weeks.

During the year 2006 they signed to Spinefarm Records and did a small European tour. In January 2007 they released their third album,Hope, which includes a cover version of the Timo Rautiainen & Trio Niskalaukaus song "Alavilla mailla" (which they translated into "These Low Lands") as a bonus track on the digipack edition, sung by Tomi Joutsen, the frontman of fellow Finnish metal band, Amorphis. There is also a guest appearance by Jonas Renkse of Katatonia on the song "The Justice of Suffering." They went on a US tour with Katatonia, Scar Symmetry and Insomnium in late 2007.

In September 2008, they released an EP called Plague of Butterflies. In October, they announced a December tour of the UK of ten live shows supporting Apocalyptica.

On May 18, 2009 Swallow the Sun announced that Kai Hahto of Wintersun will be joining to fill the void left by former drummer Pasi Pasanen.

Swallow the Sun confirmed on 12 June that their next album would be entitled New Moon and is being produced by Jens Bogren, they also stated that Kai Hahto would be doing the drums on this album.
