Bio:
Skerries based Pagan Death Metallers PRIMORDIAL, who came to the fore with their 1993 'Dark Romanticism' demo, are heavily reliant on Celtic imagery and influences. The band is fronted by Naihmass Nemtheanga (a.k.a. Alan Averill). The split single with Sweden's KATATONIA features a re-work of the band's 1993 demo 'To Enter Pagan'. For live work PRIMORDIAL drafted ARCANE SUN guitarist Feargal. Promoting the album 'A Journey's End', released on the Hammerheart label, gigs throughout Portugal and Spain during December 1999 saw support from MASQUE OF INNOCENCE, SACRED SIN and DARK TALES.
The band would form a package billing with CALLENISH CIRCLE and Denmark's MERCENARY for a short tour of the low countries in September 2002. Embarking upon a mammoth string of European shows throughout October and November 2002 PRIMORDIAL created part of a deadly union for the 'Generation Armageddon' festival tour. Joining the band would be Greece's SEPTIC FLESH, Norway's BLOOD RED THRONE, Belgium's ANCIENT RITES, and Swedish heavyweights DISMEMBER and IMPIOUS. As this activity was unveiled it would also be learned that Alan Nemtheanga had added the role of frontman for Italian Doom act VOID OF SILENCE to his responsibilities.
PRIMORDIAL hooked up with Black Metal veterans ENTHRONED from Belgium and Greece's ROTTING CHRIST For a month long European tour in January of 2003. The 'Generation Armageddon' title would be used once more for a second leg of European shows in May of 2003, the band forming a live alliance with ANCIENT RITES, THYRFING, SEPTIC FLESH, BLOOD RED THRONE and SKYFIRE.
As 2004 drww in PRIMORDIAL set to work on a fresh studio album. Also in the works would be a re-issue of the group's 1993 demo 'Dark Romanticism' through Dutch label Karmageddon Media. This came complete with four extra live tracks from 1993, including two unreleased songs, backed up with a live DVD from their Party.San Open Air performance from Germany in 2003.
PRIMORDIAL signed to Metal Blade Records in April 2003 for a fifth studio album provisionally billed as 'Harvest'. The band's appearance at the Ballylinan 'Day Of Darkness' DISMEMBER headlined festival in June would be marked with a special performance assembled by Nemtheanga in honour of the late BATHORY leader Thomas 'Quorthon' Forsberg. Running through several BATHORY numbers, Nemtheanga fronted up a band unit comprising SOL AXIS members guitarist Joey and drummer Necrohammer, GAESA bassist Phil and Brian O'Connor of KINGDOM on additional vocals.
By mid 2004 PRIMORDIAL's fifth work in progress had undergone a name switch to 'The Gathering Wilderness', these recordings, engineered by Billy Anderson, being wrapped up in November. The band recorded a cover of BATHORY's 'Total Destruction' for a tribute album entitled 'A Tribute From The Hordes To Bathory' released by Black Goat Productions.
The band announced a touring partnership as part of the December 2005 'X-Mas' festivals in Europe ranked alongside recently resurrected UK Thrashers ONSLAUGHT, EXODUS, KATAKLYSM, UNLEASHED, BEHEMOTH, and OCCULT. The band was announced as engaged in the 'X-Mass Fest Part II' European tour, set to begin in early December and involving ENTHRONED, UNLEASHED, MORBID ANGEL and ENSIFERUM. However, these dates would be pulled after UNLEASHED withdrew.
PRIMORDIAL issued a limited edition 7" picture disc split single, their track being a live version of 'The Soul Must Sleep' recorded in Vienna, Austria during 2003, in collaboration with fellow Irish act MAEL MORDHA in November through Sentinel Records. PRIMORDIAL would prove keen to hit road dirt throughout the year, putring in their US debut in January at the 'Heathen Crusade' festival in Minneapolis, touring Portugal flanking GEASA in February before undertaking the 'Heathen Crusade' tour of Europe alongside MOONSORROW, MOURNING BELOVETH and GARDENS OF GEHENNA in April before a further slew of festivals.
The band's appearance at the Gelsenkirchen 'Rock Hard' festival in Germany during June 2006 was taped and subsequently the track 'Coffin Ships' was included on the 'Rock Hard' magazine compilation album 'Rock Hard: Das Festival 2006'. The album 'To The Nameless Dead' was released in November 2007 on Metal Blade Records.
In September 2008 it was learned Alan Averill was contributing further vocals to VOID OF SILENCE and initiating a Doom Metal project branded DREAD SOVEREIGN.
